Character: Colette Brunel
Series/Fandom: Tales of Symphonia
Original or Alternate: Original
Age: 16
Gender: Female.
Species: Human/Angel
Sexuality: Bisexual, but hides it fairly well.
Appearance:
Colette is the very definition of innocent, with big blue eyes and long, fluffy blonde hair. She is always smiling, even when she isn’t happy. She’s a bit on the short side (5’2”), and a bit thin.
Although she wasn’t born as an angel, releasing her first mana seal gave her translucent pink angel wings, which she can put away. She rarely takes them out when she doesn’t need to, unless she’s trying to cheer someone up.
Colette dresses somewhat casually as well, preferring modesty over high fashion. That doesn’t go to say that she isn’t dressed nicely, however. She wears a white dress with purple trimming over darker tights and a matching pair of white and purple boots. Attached to her dress is loose material that serves a decorating purpose, hanging off the front, back, and shoulders.
She always wears a bright smile, and always appears to be happy, even when she isn’t.
Personality:
“I want a world where everyone can be happy…”
To sum up Colette in a nutshell; she is the type of person that would sacrifice anything for the sake of others. That being said, she would also try to avoid sacrificing herself if it meant causing others pain. This often puts her in unique situations, some of which change the course of the world itself.
She is a complete klutz, hardly managing to go anywhere without tripping up. Strangely enough, her clumsiness seems blessed. It always gets them /out/ of trouble, instead of in trouble. It often helps her break objects that put her or her friends in danger.
Despite the fact that she’s always tripping and falling down, Colette always gets back up again with an “oops!” and a smile on her face (With the occasional embarrassed blush as well).
She isn’t very confident about herself, and usually goes along with what she is told. She is not very threatening, but she can occasionally step up if it’s for a just cause. Colette also seems somewhat clueless at times, especially in regards to intimate matters, and she can act like a simpleton at times. That being said, she can also be very perceptive when it comes to personal feelings and matters. She speaks her heart, and believes everyone else has the capacity to do it as well.
Another trait that makes her unique is her uncanny ability to apologize for /everything/. She even apologizes for apologizing. She tends to think that everything that goes wrong is somehow her fault, even when it really isn’t, and she always tries to take the blame for her friends.
Abilities/Weapons:
Colette uses a variety of fighting techniques, most of which involve her dual chakrams. She has good aim, despite her clumsiness, and she has the will to improve.
As well as her chakrams, Colette can use angel magic, such as attacks and status boosters. Her tripping even proves useful for stealing items (although whether or not it was intentional is debatable).
Weaknesses:
Colette’s fear of worrying her friends and ruining their time together can be considered her biggest weakness. She rarely tells them when something is wrong with her, out of fear that they will waste time being concerned over her.
Her clumsiness may also be considered a weakness in a way, as it may make some people upset with her (And who can blame them, having to replace their walls and all?).
She is also very trusting, to a fault, perhaps. She would never believe any of her friends would betray her. She puts all of her faith in them, and wants so badly to believe them all of the time. This leaves her vulnerable, as she would be easily stabbed in the back. If that happened, she would also be too quick to forgive afterwards.
History:
Colette was born different from the rest of society. This wasn’t a physical or mental difference, but rather, a status difference. On the day that she was born, the angels of cruxis saw fit to place a cruxis crystal in her hand. This simple gave her the position of the Chosen of Mana. This hero was to follow in Mithos’s steps and regenerate their dying world.
This seemingly simple act completely altered the course of her life and the course of not one, but two worlds. That being said, the actual events that led to this occurrence didn’t take place until she was sixteen. Until the day that the oracle was received , Colette lived a fairly normal childhood. She had friends, went to school, and became quite popular among the villagers. One in particular, Lloyd Irving, a boy who lived outside town with his adoptive dwarf father, became an irreplaceable presence in her life. He was her best friend, and always stood by her no matter what.
It was because of this, that on the day that the oracle from cruxis finally arrived for her, it was him that went with her to the temple. Desians, a group of half-elves that ran human ranches, were causing trouble at the Martel temple. With the help of Lloyd and a mercenary who introduced himself as Kratos, they drove the Desians away and entered the temple. Colette was to undergo her trial.
While the trial itself wasn’t difficult, the events following it were extremely life-altering for Colette. They rid the temple of monsters, finding a ring called the ‘Sorcerer’s Ring’ in the process. Soon, they reached the first seal, where Colette was to receive judgement from the angels. Ay this moment, Colette’s position as the Chosen of Mana was solidified. She was given the cruxis crystal by an angel named Remiel, who was also assumed to be her real father, and she underwent the first change in the angel transformation- wings. She was very uneasy about it, but never revealed this to her friends out of fear that she would worry them.
Not long after meeting Remiel, she began preparing for her journey to regenerate the world. Since all the priests that were to accommodate her were killed by the Desians at the temple, Kratos and her teacher, Professor Raine, were to join her. She lied to her best friend, Lloyd about letting him come as well because it was too dangerous. She also knew that the journey was supposed to end in her sacrifice, and she wrote him a farewell letter to apologize.
Unknown to her, the village of Iselia was attacked by Desians later that same day and both Lloyd and Raine’s younger brother Genis were blamed. They were banished from the village and had to follow her to the next seal. It was to be the seal of fire located in the scorching desert. Hearing news from Genis that Lloyd was captured and held at a base nearby, they raced to his rescue. At the base, they not only saved Lloyd, but also ran into the same Desian that had been at the Temple. Pondering this connection, they finally headed to the next seal.
Strangely enough, they were attacked before even entering. Kratos, stating that their lack of defensive techniques would be a nuisance, taught them all new guarding spells. Once they approached the oracle stone, Colette opened the door, and they entered the hot interior.
To say that it was a heated battle wouldn’t be inaccurate. After solving the puzzles inside, and defeating the monsters guarding the seal, Remiel appeared once again. This time, to tell her where the next one would be located. Colette was then subjected to another change; She no longer needed to eat. Keeping this a secret was difficult, especially since she collapsed briefly outside the temple. Raine named her symptoms ‘Angel Toxicosis’.
Continuing on to the third seal, and still having no idea how many there were in total, they had to cross the sea. The group headed to Izoold, and along the way, they were in for an unpleasant surprise. An assassin, after Colette’s life tried to attack them along the way. This lead to several questions. Why was someone who was not a Desian trying to kill the Chosen? How did she know where to find them?
They got a ride across the sea from a sailor in Izoold, and arrived at Palmacosta. It wasn’t long before Colette’s clumsiness made itself known. As they were turning a corner, she collided with another girl and accidentally broke her potion. While they were searching for a replacement, they found out that there were impostors masquerading as the Chosen’s group and that these impostors had been given the book of regeneration. This was the only written record of a previous Chosen’s journey, and it would contain the location of all the seals.
Strangely enough, Colette’s clumsiness turned out to be fortunate, as the impostors were the ones they ran into earlier. They bartered with the old man they had sold it to, trading a Spiritua statue for it. Now they knew where the seals were located; at the Thoda Geyser, Balacruf Mausoleum, and the Tower of Mana. The first one-Thoda Geyser- was easy. Remiel then told her not to disappoint him. Although she never showed it, Colette was starting to believe he wasn’t her real father.
Like the last two seals, this one caused a change in Colette. She no longer felt the need to sleep, couldn’t if she wanted to. And like before, she hid this from her friends, claiming she just wasn’t tired when they saw how late she stayed up.
After chasing away a monster in the town of Asgard, they located the next sea and broke it. While they were leaving, they met up with the mysterious assassin once again. Before she left this time, she claimed to be the ‘good’ one, blaming the journey of regeneration for problems she wouldn’t explain. It was confusing for them, but they had more pressing issues- such as Colette’s Angel Toxicosis.
At this seal, Colette lost her ability to feel anything at all. It wasn’t long before Lloyd discovered what was wrong. Colette insisted that they continue they journey despite her illness. She said it didn’t matter because it was for the sake of regenerating the world, which she viewed as being more important than her own life. It was about now that she confided the truth about the end of her journey to Raine, who had already figured it out a long time ago.
They met up with the assassin once more in the destroyed town of Luin under very different circumstances. She had been injured trying to protect the villagers from a Desian raid. She joined them in saving them from the human ranch and they headed to the tower of Mana afterwards.
After releasing the final seal, Remiel told her it was finally time to climb the Tower of Salvation. Finally, the time had arrived to regenerate the world. Of course, this came with another sacrifice- Colette’s voice. After witnessing what Colette had to suffer through for the ritual, the former assassin, named Sheena, finally revealed why she had been trying to kill Colette. She was from a parallel world called Tethe’alla, which would go into decline if Colette completed Sylvarant’s Ritual of Regeneration. This world even had it’s own Chosen of Mana. Sheena then agreed to help them find a way to save both worlds so neither of them will suffer.
After taking care of a few other tasks, they borrowed some dragons and flew to the tower. Colette rode with Kratos, who had been acting strange the past few days. He didn’t say a word through the whole ride, and they arrived much earlier then Lloyd and the others. Kratos insisted that they go on ahead, and Colette obeyed, trusting his idea was in their best interests. Once they got inside, Kratos told her to release the seal and left her alone, for reasons he didn’t state.
Just as she was getting ready to make the final sacrifice, her heart and memory, Lloyd and the others showed up to stop her. They ended up being too late and Colette agreed to give them up, for what she believed would save both worlds. She had been right about Remiel, as he wasn’t her real father after all, and Cruxis and the Desians were part of the same organization, led by Yggdrasill.
The events following this were a blur to her. She knew Kratos had betrayed them, they had been rescued by the renegades, escaped to Tethe’alla, joined up with two new people name Zelos and Presea, and she was given a necklace by Lloyd. It wasn’t until Zelos accidentally led them into a trap that the key crest on the necklace finally activated and her ‘soul’ was restored. What had actually happened was a parasitical infection from the cruxis crystal, which was in reality an advanced form of exsphere.
Eventually, they realize that in order to reunite the two worlds, they would have to sever all the mana links in both Sylvarant and Tethe’alla. They believed that this would cause the great seed that connected the worlds to sprout. They thought that by doing do, the tree of ever flowing mana would be revived, and the worlds able to support themselves as one.
Unfortunately, this didn’t go as planned. After ripping out the mana links that connected the worlds, something went horribly wrong. Kratos had tried to warn them, but they went ahead and made a pact with the final summon spirit regardless. Instead of sprouting like it should, the giant tree grew out of control and threatened to destroy the worlds. Colette blamed herself again and promised to make it right. It was about now that she finally started to realize something was wrong with her shoulder. Still, she didn’t let the others know.
Lloyd, surprisingly, was the one to figure out a way to stop the growth. He sent Sheena to blast it with Mana of Tethe’alla summon spirits, while Colette’s group went to infiltrate a ranch. Again, Colette’s clumsiness turned out to be a blessing in disguise when she tripped and caused the system to shut down for them. After they thought they had killed Forcystus, the master of the ranch, he surprised them and attacked Colette, causing the shoulder area of her shirt to be ripped. The crystallization on her shoulder was revealed, and discovered to be the result of her cruxis crystal. In order to find the cure, they had to clear Zelos’ name and use the books in the Meltokio castle archive. They needed three ingredients, one of which was in Welgaia, Cruxis’s home base.
First, they got the easier materials, one of which required them to go to Heimdale, the elf village. Sooner than they imagined, it was time to visit Welgaia. They fought Kratos once again, and were captured. As it turned out, they managed to retrieve a mana fragment and narrowly escape. They went to a dwarf name Altessa, who had helped them out before, and Colette rested there.
After some trouble with cruxis, and Lloyd finding out that Kratos was his father, Altessa was injured. They were forced to fly all the way to Flanoir, a snowy city in the north, to find a good doctor. Some of them stayed the night in Flanoir, while the rest left with the doctor.
That night, Colette spoke to Lloyd about Kratos and reminded him that she trusted him. She gave him a snow bunny charm as good luck and they admired the beautiful view of Flanoir together. She knew there wasn’t a place she would like to be more right then.
The next day, her missing companions rejoined her and they finally headed back to the tower of salvation. This time, with a different goal in mind; To retrieve the Eternal Sword from Yggdrasill. They now believed that they could use it to reunite the worlds. Once they arrived inside the Tower however, Zelos said he had an idea. He asked Colette to join him further in. Colette was curious about his plan, but went along with it regardless.
Zelos had lead her into a trap!
From out of nowhere, Pronyma, one of the five Grand Cardinals appeared, and Zelos admitted to being a double agent. Colette was taken to become Martel’s new body, which was what the original ritual of regeneration was intended for in the first place.
Just when it looked like there was no escape, her friends appeared and saved her. They revealed that Zelos has rescued them from the traps and was only pretending to betray them to steal a rare ore they needed. Mithos was furious for ‘having his sister taken away from him’, and was about to attack them, but she never found out what happened next, as she was then pulled into Econtra.
